Stainless Steel Fastener Grades
18-8 Stainless SteelType 302, 303, 304, and 305 stainless steel are all interchangeably referred to as 18-8 stainless steel. 18-8 stainless steel is austenitic and is the most common stainless steel. 18-8 provides good corrosion resistance with excellent durability. Strength for 18-8 stainless steel is between grade 2 and grade 5.
316 Stainless Steel
Type 316 stainless steel provides improved corrosion resistance compared to 18-8 stainless steel and is non-magnetic. The strength of 316 stainless steel is similar to 18-8, between grades 2 and 5.
400 Series Stainless Steel
Type 400 stainless steels can be heat-treated to provide improved strength but have less corrosion resistance than other forms of stainless steel. 400 series stainless steels are also magnetic.
Fastener Finishes & Plates
Silver Zinc Plated
Silver zinc is the most common coating for fasteners, providing good corrosion resistance.
Yellow Zinc Plated
Yellow zinc is most often used with grade 8 fasteners. It provides improved corrosion resistance for a longer lasting coating.
Plain Finish
Plain finish has no coating, providing no corrosion resistance. Plain finish fasteners are for indoor use only.
Hot Dip Galvanized
Hot Dip Galvanizing is used for outdoor applications, providing one of the most effective corrosion resistance coatings available.
Phosphate & Oil Coated
Phosphate and Oil coating is used on frame bolts and nuts, providing a high level of corrosion resistance. Phosphate and Oil coating is black or dark gray in color.
Black Oxide Coated
Black Oxide Coating provides a light amount of corrosion resistance. Black Oxide is primarily used to give fasteners a black finished appearance.
